Trevor Noah to host MAMA as Wizkid, Linda Ikeji, others get nominations

South African comedy legend and host of Comedy Central’s ‘The Daily Show’, Trevor Noah, would host the sixth edition of the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) taking place in Johannesburg.

Speaking on his hosting, Trevor Noah said: “I’m a huge fan of African music and achievement, and it’s going to be a massive pleasure celebrating them both at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2016 in my own home town of Johannesburg.”

Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN Africa), Alex Okosi said: “Trevor Noah is an outstanding entertainer and testament to the amazing talent that Africa has to offer the world. To have him host the MAMA – our annual celebration of Africa music, creativity and achievement – is a powerful and inspiring message. We are delighted that our first ever show in Johannesburg will be presented by one of the city’s most loved and admired personalities.”

Noah will preside over the live two-hour telecast at the Ticketpro Dome, Johannesburg on October 22, 2016. Featuring performances from outstanding African stars like Alikiba, Babes Woduma, Cassper Nyovest, Nasty C, Ycee and Yemi Alade; MAMA 2016 will also stream online on www.mtvbase.com.

Previous hosts of the MAMA have included Wyclef Jean, Eve, Marlon Wayans, Anthony Anderson and Trevor Nelson.

The show will also be transmitted worldwide on partner stations and content platforms from October onwards, while MTV channels around the world will broadcast a one-hour MAMA-themed MTV World Stage.

Meanwhile, Nigerian star Wizkid is leading the list of nominees with three nominations including Best Male, Best Collaboration and Personality of the Year.

However, blogger Linda Ikeji (Nigeria), musician Wizkid (Nigeria), soccer player Pierre Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon), Olympic gold medalist Caster Semenya and Pearl Thusi vie for ‘Personality of the Year’ award.

Fifty MAMA nominees including artistes and achievers from 18 countries were revealed in nine key music and lifestyle award categories by Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Africa and MTV Base at a star-studded reception at Constitution Hill, Johannesburg, South Africa on Wednesday.

Other stars that have made the nomination list so far are Patoranking (Nigeria), Sarkordie (Ghana), Sauti Sol (Kenya), Olamide (Nigeria), Emtee and Riky Rick (South Africa), Navy Kenzo (Tanzania) and Toofan (Togo).

Voting for MAMA 2016 closes at 10.59pm on October 19, 2016.
